How much does it cost to add a chatbot to your website?
Most articles answering this question stall for six paragraphs before giving you a number, so here it is first: adding a chatbot to your website costs anywhere from $0 to about $500 per month, and which end you land on depends far less on the chatbot than on how the vendor decided to charge you. A WordPress site owner running a self-hosted plugin with their own API key often pays under $10 a month. The same traffic on a per-resolution SaaS platform can bill $300+. Same conversations, same value to the visitor, wildly different invoice.
This guide breaks down what you actually pay for, the four pricing models you’ll run into, and how to estimate your own bill before you commit.
The Short Answer, by Tier
- Free tier / open-source plugin: $0 for the software. You still pay for AI model usage if it’s an AI chatbot — typically a few dollars a month for a small site.
- One-time license (self-hosted): roughly $50–$300 once, plus your own model usage. No recurring platform fee.
- Entry SaaS subscription: about $20–$60 per month, usually capped by conversation or contact volume.
- Mid-market SaaS: roughly $80–$400 per month once you add seats, integrations, or resolution-based billing.
- Custom-built chatbot: $5,000–$50,000+ upfront in development, plus hosting and maintenance.
The Four Ways Chatbot Vendors Charge You
Understanding chatbot pricing models matters more than comparing sticker prices, because two products with identical monthly headline figures can differ by 10x once your traffic grows.
1. Per-seat (per agent)
You pay for each human on the team who can access the inbox. Common with live-chat tools that bolted an AI layer onto an existing help desk. Predictable, and reasonable if you have a real support team — but you’re paying for humans while the point of the chatbot was to need fewer of them.
2. Per-resolution (per conversation the bot closes)
The current favourite of AI-first support vendors. You’re billed each time the bot resolves a ticket without escalating. It sounds fair and aligns cost with value, but it has a sharp edge: the better your bot gets, the more you pay. Budgeting is difficult because your bill scales directly with traffic you can’t predict.
3. Per-message or credit bundles
You buy a block of messages, interactions, or “credits” and burn them down. Watch how a credit is defined — some vendors count each visitor message, some count each bot reply, and some charge more credits for messages that hit the knowledge base. Overage rates are where the real cost hides.
4. One-time license plus your own API key
You buy the software once, connect your own AI provider account, and pay that provider directly for usage at cost. There’s no platform margin on top of the model calls and no per-conversation meter. This is the model self-hosted WordPress plugins generally use, and it’s the cheapest option at almost any volume — the trade-off being that you own the setup and the hosting.
What Actually Drives the Cost
- Conversation volume. The single biggest variable on any usage-based plan. Ten conversations a day and a thousand are not the same product economically.
- Which AI model you run. Frontier reasoning models cost meaningfully more per conversation than small fast models. For most website FAQ and support work, a smaller model answers just as well at a fraction of the cost.
- Knowledge base size. Retrieval-augmented chatbots send retrieved context with every request, so a large document set makes each conversation more expensive in tokens.
- Integrations. CRM sync, ticketing, e-commerce order lookup, and human handoff are commonly gated behind higher tiers.
- Seats and branding. Removing vendor branding and adding team members are two of the most common reasons a $29 plan becomes a $149 plan.

Working Out Your Actual Monthly Bill
Because MxChat runs on your own OpenAI API key, the software cost and the usage cost are separate — which is the whole point. You enter the key in the admin dashboard and pay your provider directly for what the bot actually uses. There’s no monthly platform subscription and no per-conversation surcharge.
To estimate: take your expected conversations per month, multiply by the rough token cost of one conversation on your chosen model, and add nothing else. For a small business site fielding a few dozen conversations a day on a small, fast model, that lands in the low single-digit dollars per month. A busy site running a frontier model over a large knowledge base will obviously pay more — but you’ll be paying the model provider’s rate, not a marked-up one, and you can cut the bill immediately by switching models in a dropdown.
This is also why the “free” question has a real answer here rather than a trick one. MxChat Basic genuinely costs nothing, and your only expense is metered model usage you control.
Chatbot Development Cost: When Custom Is Worth It
If you’ve been quoted five figures for a custom chatbot build, it’s worth being clear about what that money buys. Custom development makes sense when you need deep integration with proprietary internal systems, have compliance requirements that rule out third-party processing, or need conversational logic no off-the-shelf tool models well.
It does not make sense for the overwhelmingly common case: answering questions about your products, services, hours, shipping, and documentation. That problem is solved by configuring an existing plugin with your own content, and the gap between a $50,000 custom build and a well-configured $70 plugin is much smaller in 2026 than most agencies selling the former would like you to believe.
Chatbot Cost FAQ
How much does a chatbot cost per month?
For a small website, realistically $0–$30 per month all-in if you use a free or one-time-license plugin with your own API key. On subscription SaaS platforms, entry plans typically start around $20–$60 per month and rise quickly with conversation volume, seats, and integrations.
Is there a monthly fee for a website chatbot?
Only if the pricing model has one. Subscription platforms charge monthly by design. Self-hosted plugins with a one-time license don’t — you pay once for the software and then only for metered AI usage.
Why do chatbot prices vary so much?
Mostly because of the billing model rather than the product. A per-resolution vendor and a one-time-license plugin can deliver a near-identical visitor experience while producing invoices an order of magnitude apart at the same traffic level. Compare on total cost at your expected volume, not on the advertised entry price.
What’s the cheapest way to add an AI chatbot to a website?
A free self-hosted plugin connected to your own AI provider account. You avoid the platform subscription entirely and pay only the underlying model cost, which for a typical small-business site is a few dollars a month.
Do I need to pay for the AI model separately?
With the bring-your-own-key model, yes — and that’s usually to your advantage. You’re billed at the provider’s published rate with no reseller margin, you can see exactly what you’re spending, and you can change models at any time to trade cost against answer quality.
